Title : Service Provider to Deliver a GreenTech Makerthon in Jordan
Procurement No. : 100012643
Process : RFP
Description : GGGI is recruiting a highly qualified and experienced firm to facilitate and deliver the GreenTech Makerthon in Jordan.
PROJECT BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES:
Jordan faces resource scarcity, particularly in water and fossil fuels, necessitating a transition towards a more sustainable and resource-efficient economy. Environmental challenges, such as desertification, land degradation, and water scarcity, can be mitigated through green jobs that minimize the negative environmental impact of industries and encourage sustainable practices. High unemployment rates, especially among refugees, youth, and women, can be addressed by generating new green employment opportunities, targeting marginalized groups, and promoting social equality. Green jobs also contribute to climate change mitigation, helping Jordan meet its commitments under the Paris Agreement. Furthermore, green jobs projects align with the UN SDGs. In sum, sustainable, inclusive green jobs creation projects in Jordan can contribute to addressing the country's economic, social, and environmental challenges.
GGGI is implementing the project titled "Creating Sustainable Green Jobs for Refugees and Host Communities through the Green Economy in Jordan" co-financed by KOICA and GGGI over three years (2023-2026). The project aims to achieve the following three main outcomes:
1. Provide evidence of the economic and environmental benefits of green employment to enable a green employment environment in Jordan;
2. Enhance job seekers' employability in green sectors through skill development and increased climate change awareness (especially women and youth); and,
3. Establish green business incubation & acceleration on/offline programs for green entrepreneurs / green startups for green entrepreneurs/green startups.
Objective of the assignment
The objective of this assignment is to support the delivery of Outcome 3. GGGI seeks the services of an experienced partner to deliver a GreenTech Makerthon, which aims to develop technological solutions utilizing various digital and technology-based approaches, including hardware, software, artificial intelligence (AI), and the Internet of Things (IoT), to address environmental challenges, fostering innovative and sustainable business solutions. This initiative seeks to empower participants with both environmental awareness and technical skills to develop technological solutions that address pressing environmental issues.
The makerthon will bring together 50 participants, aged 18 and above, from Amman, Mafraq, Irbid, and Zarqa, ensuring a diverse and inclusive pool of innovators passionate about sustainability and technology.
Makerthon Structure
The makerthon is an extended format from a hackathon and bootcamp that will be conducted in four key phases:
• Training & Ideation (Hackathon): Participants will receive specialized training on environmental challenges, followed by technical workshops to enhance their AI and tech-based problem-solving skills. Brainstorming sessions will help generate innovative ideas and focus on inception and design.
• Prototyping & Follow-Up: Over a one-month period, selected teams will receive mentorship and basic technical equipment, which includes the hardware used for solution programming, such as control boards, sensors, wires, and all necessary components to develop and improve their solutions, creating and testing functional prototypes (allocation of an average budget of $500 for tools per project for ten projects).
• Final Innovation Bootcamp: The makerthon will culminate in an intensive innovation bootcamp, where teams will finalize their projects, working through any final issues, and preparing them for the final pitching session. On the last day, a judging panel will evaluate the pitched projects, followed by an award ceremony.
• Individualized Support to Winning Teams: Prizes will be awarded to three winning teams. Each team will receive electronic devices, specialized technical training by the service provider, and training on a sustainable business model by GGGI.
This initiative is committed to fostering a sustainable, tech-driven ecosystem, prioritizing participation from youth, women, and underrepresented communities. The GreenTech Makerthon aims to create scalable, real-world solutions that contribute to environmental sustainability.
