About
In 2005, Global Communities (previously PCI) established a solid reputation in Ethiopia for providing comprehensive, community-based programming that helps people become more resilient to shocks caused by the environment and armed conflicts.
The country has been experiencing disasters with growing regularity and severity due to long-term environmental deterioration, changing global weather patterns, and further aggravated by climate change. Worth mentioning is the 2017 drought, which resulted in Ethiopia's biggest food crisis in 30 years, putting up to 18 million individuals at risk of hunger and diseases due to the lack of crops or rangeland to sustain their cattle or themselves.
Climate change has altered typical pasture development patterns for the nation's pastoralists, who now face higher expenses in scouting for pasture and additional feed when pasture cannot be found. Hundreds of thousands of animals perished from a lack of food and water, leaving people food insecure and vulnerable.
Global Communities aims to assist communities in addressing these continuing and arising crises through:
Operations in six of the nation's nine regions and two administrative cities
A major presence in vulnerable lowland areas
A solid programmatic knowledge in resilience, sustainable development, well-being, gender equity, and social inclusion.
