About
The Institute was established in 1956 (the first organizational form in 1953) to conduct basic research in the field of operating principles, design and construction of machines used to convert energy in flows. Currently, the Institute conducts research in the field of: fluid mechanics, multiphase flows, thermodynamics and heat transfer, combustion, plasma physics, laser technology, machine mechanics, mechanics of intelligent structures, technical diagnostics, tribology, aeroelasticity and other areas in the field of engineering and -technical.
In 2022, the Institute employed 215 employees, including about 70 employees in scientific positions. The Institute is authorized to confer doctoral and postdoctoral degrees in engineering and technical sciences in the discipline of mechanical engineering.
In its structure, the Institute has five centers divided into 19 research departments and the Research Center of the Polish Academy of Sciences in Jabłonna. In addition to basic research, the Institute offers research services on practical engineering problems in the field of: turbines and microturbines, pumps, compressors, fans, ship propellers, renewable energy sources, machinery and equipment design, calculations and technical expertise, construction of unique equipment and measuring equipment.
