Washington State Department of Transportation (WA State DOT) is responsible for maintaining a multimodal transportation system and ensuring that people and goods are transported safely and effectively.

It was founded in 1905 and is responsible for the state ferry system which is the country's largest ferry system, transporting 24.2 million passengers and 10 million cars each year, in addition to building, maintaining and operating the state highway system. It also collaborates with 31 public transportation systems to offer nearly 220 million passenger journeys each year.
