Description

Project Title: Information collection in energy efficiency for fisheries
Acronym: ICEEF
Summary:
The current call for tender is related to a policy support project undertaken by action FISHREG (Fisheries Management and Enforcement) inside the Maritime Affairs Unit of Institute IPSC of the Joint Research Centre (JRC). This project is part of the work programme for action FISHREG. It is part of a number of activities in direct support of the Common Fisheries Policy on behalf of Directorate General Maritime Affairs and Fisheries (DG MARE) of the European Commission.
JRC has developed a pilot website on energy efficiency in fisheries, available at http://energyefficiency-fisheries.jrc.ec.europa.eu. The JRC site is accessible directly through the European website of DG MARE for fisheries. The pilot website includes reference documents and studies related to energy savings in fisheries, general information on research and funding opportunities and links to relevant EU projects, EU legislation and events, among others. Since 2010, the Project tender ICEEF (IPSC/2010/04/03/NC), financed by the Commission to CNR-ISMAR of Ancona, started the collection of additional information to update and improve the JRC website.

TOPICS SPECIFICATIONS

The information collection is organized into different topics, as described below.

Engines, fuels (incl. biofuels), emissions, reduced environmental impacts, auxiliary power:

This topic is referred to new marine engine developments focused on energy saving. In particular, new and more efficient engines, using less fuel or bio fuels and reducing noxious emissions.

Vessel design and technology including, new hull systems, fishing boat design;

In this topic you can find information about energy saving related to new hull concepts and hydrodynamics new solutions related to propulsion systems

Propulsion systems, propellers:

In this topic information are collected about propulsion systems, propellers design and efficiency, performances and non conventional propellers developments. New hybrid diesel – electric engines are also investigated.

Machinery

Innovative system for auxiliary power and innovative machinery for energy saving such as electric and high efficiency deck machinery

Vessel operation (maintenance of hulls and engines);

Hull cleaning and maintenance; Propeller cleaning; Engine controlling and maintenance

Use of alternative or renewable energy sources (wind, hydrogen fuel cells etc.);

Power units applied onboard fishing vessels, renewable energy or alternative non fossil fuel based energy

Efficient fishing gears (e.g. reduced gear drag), selectivity;

Fishing gears capable to reduce energy consumption for the same performances; Fishing gears with improved selectivity to reduce bycatch;
Fishing tactics and techniques (e.g. from active to passive techniques, routing optimization etc.);

Course management; Fishing area monitoring and management;

Fuel management systems, energy monitoring and control systems, energy audits, other energy uses onboard (e.g. auxiliary engines);

Monitoring systems for fuel consumption, energy usage, fishing gear geometrical characteristics and their advantages for energy saving and economic benefits

VISIT REPORTS

Many imprtant key activities and events were visited by experts in order to collect information regarding the above mentioned topics. Also some interview to important entities were carried out.
