Description

Project Total Value: 11,000,000 EUR

Detailed description of project:
The main objective of the proposed project is to protect the Batumi coast against erosion.
The coastline southwest of Batumi is affected by erosion over a length of about 5 km. along this section a number of houses and cultivated land has been lost already in the past. Without adequate protection measures coastal erosion will continue at the airport area and might even affect the beaches and the coastline of Batumi. The evaluation of the alternatives to protect the coast against the erosion affecting the southern section of the littoral has shown that a soft intervention, featuring recirculation of the sediment between the northern section of the littoral (where it accumulates due to natural transport pattern) and the southern portion (from where it is removed due to erosion), is the most efficient way to protect and restore the beach when combined with an armored revetment at the southern portion.
Therefore, the main intervention aiming at stabilizing this portion of the Batumi coastline features artificial nourishment in the southern portion of the littoral, just north of the airport, spread over a beach length of approximately 2,000 m, using material taken from the northern part of the coastline (where beach accretion is occurring). The modelling studies have shown that the volume of materials needed to maintain the stability of the southern part of the coastline is 30000m3/y.
The main works foresee ninth is Adaptation design for Batumi coastal protection shall comprise:
1. Beachcapitalnourishmentofabout120,000m3of sand and pebble mixture along as tretch of coast of about 1,680 minorder to supply a volume of material of the same order of magnitude of that erodedinthe last years;
2. Construction of are vetmentinthe southern portion of the littoral, for about1,8km,including n° 10beachaccesses;
3. Reconstruction of the boulevard for about 1,750m;
The Consultant is responsible for Supervision of Coastal Protection Works in the City of Batumi noted above, including excavation and earthworks for the placement of renourishment material, filter layers, and revetment armor rock layer, construction of concrete culverts, drainage systems and new boulevard including all expected earth works for boulevard.
