The Siracusa International Institute for Criminal Justice and Human Rights presents its 20th Specialization Course in International Criminal Law for Young Penalists.
Since 1972, the Siracusa International Institute for Criminal Justice and Human Rights has worked on international initiatives towards the advancement of human rights and the rule of law in the world. Forty-eight years later, the Institute continues to be at the forefront of contemporary human rights research, capacity building and advocacy. Furthermore, the Institute is particularly committed to the advancement and development of the next generation of human rights advocates through its specialization courses in legal doctrine and international criminal law.
One of the signature and most prominent activities the Siracusa Institute organizes is the ICL Course, hosted annually at the Institute’s headquarters in Siracusa. This year’s course will address “Human Rights, Criminal Justice and International Law”, and will take place from May 24 until June 1.
The courses that have taken place in the past were attended by 1,055 young professionals cumulatively from 101 countries spanning five continents. The Course gathers around 60 of the brightest young scholars from across the globe, including recent law graduates, practitioners, academics and students, pursuing higher education or careers in the fields of international criminal law and international relations. Professor William A. Schabas, Professor of International Law at Middlesex University, chairs and coordinates the course, assuring the highest quality of education administered by some of the most erudite academics and researchers in the field of international criminal law. This year’s confirmed instructors include Paolo Pinto de Albuquerque, Judge of the European Court of Human Rights, Wang Xiumei, Professor of International Criminal Law at the College for Criminal Law Science of Beijing Normal University, China, and Charles Chernor Jalloh, Professor of Law at Florida International University College of Law and Member of the United Nations International Law Commission.
The Specialization Course will address the following topics:
- International Crimes: Genocide, Crimes Against Humanity, War Crimes and the Crime of Aggression
- Fair Trial Guarantees, Rights of the Defence and The Place of Victims in International Criminal Law
- Human Rights and International Criminal Law in Armed Conflict: the 70th Anniversary of the Geneva Conventions
- Sexual and Gender-Based Crimes and International Law
- Jurisdictional Problems: Universal and Other forms of Jurisdiction
- Punishment, Detention and Human Rights
- Transitional Justice and Restorative Justice
- New Perspectives: Cultural Property, Environmental Crimes, Cybercrime
and include group exercises and a moot court competition. At the end of the course, all participants will be delivered a certificate of participation for the course.
The ICL course – which is sponsored by the International Association of Penal Law (AIDP – France), the University of Palermo Department of Law (Italy), the Irish Centre for Human Rights, National University of Ireland (Galway, Ireland), the Middlesex University Department of Law (London, UK), and the College for Criminal Law Science of Beijing Normal University (Beijing, China) – has evolved into one of the Siracusa Institute’s most rewarding and successful events over the years.
