Latest Human Development Index to be released on 14 September 2018

The Human Development Indices and Indicators: 2018 Statistical Update, which includes UNDP’s signature index, the Human Development Index (HDI), will be released on 14 September 2018 at 10 am EDT.

The 2018 Statistical Update provides a brief overview of the state of human development – snapshots of current conditions as well as long-term trends – and includes the following data:

  • The Human Development Index, calculated this year for 189 countries, ranks countries according to their progress in key dimensions of human development – health, education and income;
  • Trends in the Human Development Index, which highlights changes in HDI over a period ranging from 1990 to 2017, showing which countries that have improved more and which ones have suffered setbacks in human development while allowing for the analysis of long-term trends;
  • The Inequality-Adjusted Human Development Index, calculated for 151 countries, captures which countries are most and least unequal in terms of the distribution of health, education and income gains among their populations;
  • The Gender Development Index, which showcases gaps in human development achievements between men and women for 164 countries, and the Gender Inequality Index, which captures gender-based inequalities for 160 countries in health, empowerment, and economic status;
  • Five new statistical dashboards on the 1) quality of human development; 2) life-course gender gaps; 3) women’s empowerment; 4) environmental sustainability; and 5) socioeconomic sustainability.
