The Global Fund to Fight AIDS, Tuberculosis, and Malaria (the Global Fund) announced the first pledge to its Eighth Replenishment Campaign – and it comes from the private sector. The Children’s Investment Fund Foundation (CIFF) has made a groundbreaking US$150 million commitment, a five-fold increase from its previous contribution.
This historic pledge not only underscores CIFF’s unwavering commitment to global health but also sets a powerful precedent for private sector leadership in the fight against HIV/AIDS, tuberculosis (TB), and malaria.
As global challenges intensify, the Global Fund’s role in safeguarding health and equity has never been more vital. The Global Fund is mobilizing support from across sectors – not only to protect the gains made over the past two decades, but also to drive the next wave of innovations, strengthen health systems, and build preparedness for future pandemics. CIFF’s catalytic investment exemplifies the strategic, forward-looking partnership needed to turn scientific breakthroughs into real-world impact.
With an ambitious goal to raise US$2 billion from private donors for its Eighth Replenishment, the Global Fund is recognizing and elevating the role of the private sector as a transformative force in global health. Every dollar invested delivers an estimated US$19 in health gains and economic returns, creating lasting benefits. By leveraging private capital and innovation, the Global Fund is shaping high-impact, sustainable solutions that can transform public health worldwide.
UK Foreign Secretary, David Lammy said, “It’s fantastic to see a British organization giving so generously to such an important cause. The Global Fund is helping to tackle the world’s most infectious diseases – HIV, TB and malaria. This donation from the UK’s Children’s Investment Fund Foundation will be crucial in allowing them to reach even more of the world’s most vulnerable people. In this challenging era, it’s more important than ever that governments and the private sector work together to multiply our impact.”
Peter Sands, Executive Director of the Global Fund, hailed this pledge as a landmark moment in global health: “As the first pledge for the Eighth Replenishment, today’s inspiring commitment from the Children’s Investment Fund Foundation marks a major milestone in our campaign. CIFF’s generous support not only empowers us to intensify the fight against HIV, tuberculosis and malaria but also sets a compelling benchmark for other donors. Together, we can harness our collective resources to accelerate access to game-changing innovations that can transform health outcomes for communities around the world.”
One key area of focus will be deploying cutting-edge HIV innovations, specifically the long-acting injectable drug lenacapavir for HIV prevention. Recognizing the urgent need for effective prevention tools that can reach those most affected, the Global Fund and CIFF are poised to collaborate to significantly expand access to this groundbreaking medication. With lenacapavir, patients can access preventive care in a more manageable and less invasive manner, ultimately improving adherence and health outcomes.
Sir Chris Hohn, Founder of the Children’s Investment Fund Foundation expressed the importance of partnership in achieving global health goals, stating, “We are proud to stand with the Global Fund in its vital mission to improve health for the most vulnerable people. Our US$150 million pledge is a strategic, catalytic investment, designed to complement the vital need for more public funding for primary healthcare systems. By accelerating the roll-out of innovations like self-testing and injectable PrEP for HIV prevention, we know that the Global Fund can make a huge difference to the lives of vulnerable people, so I hope that all partners will recognize the urgent need to act now.”
This partnership aims to inspire other private sector donors to engage in the fight against infectious diseases, highlighting the critical necessity of involving private contributions as part of a holistic global health strategy. The Global Fund’s unique model of collaboration among governments, civil society, communities, and the private sector exemplifies how shared resources can achieve extraordinary results.
With the collective experience and determination of the Global Fund and CIFF, the Eighth Replenishment campaign is not only tackling the ongoing challenges of HIV, tuberculosis, and malaria – it is also driving transformative change. Strengthening the health systems that protect millions, it lays the foundation for a more resilient, equitable,e and future-ready global health architecture.
The Global Fund calls on private sector leaders and philanthropists to join this collective effort – not only to support the Eighth Replenishment, but also to help shape a future where innovation, equity, and partnership drive sustained progress in global health. Together, the organizations can turn scientific breakthroughs into scalable solutions that save lives, strengthen health systems, and create lasting impact. This is a pivotal moment to help build a more resilient and inclusive global health architecture – one that delivers for everyone, especially the most vulnerable, and for generations to come.
