World Environment Day (WED) is an annual event celebrated on 5th June to raise awareness and promote action for the protection of the planet and the environment. It was established by the United Nations General Assembly in 1972 to encourage worldwide awareness and action for the protection of the environment.
This year, WED will be hosted by Côte d’Ivoire to celebrate its 50th year under the theme “solutions to plastic pollution” under the #BeatPlasticPollution campaign. Events and activities will be organized by governments, NGOs, communities, and individuals around the world to increase public awareness, encourage transformative action, and build effective coalitions to reduce and overcome plastic pollution.
UNEP’s International Environment Technology Centre (IETC) in Osaka is organizing a World Environment Day (WED) webinar on ongoing initiatives and efforts aimed at addressing plastic waste problems, including innovative solutions, policies, and best practices. Speakers include representatives from the UNEP, the Japanese Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Japanese private sector, as well as speakers from government and community organizations from various regions.
The event will be conducted via Zoom and offer simultaneous interpretation in English and Japanese. The webinar is expected to inspire and motivate individuals, organizations, and governments to act toward reducing plastic waste and promoting a circular economy approach.
