A growing number of countries see nuclear power playing an essential role in contributing to sustainable development and the mitigation of climate change. Some 440 nuclear power reactors, operating in 32 countries, provide about 390 gigawatts of nuclear power generating capacity. They produce over a quarter of the worldβs low-carbon electricity. About 50 additional countries have expressed interest in the introduction of nuclear power.
The conference is organized in partnership with the International Energy Agency and in cooperation with the OECD Nuclear Energy Agency. It is hosted by the Government of the United States of America through the Department of Energy. This ministerial follows conferences held in Paris (2005), Beijing (2009), St. Petersburg (2013), and Abu Dhabi (2017).
The conference will provide a forum for ministers, policymakers, senior officials, and experts to engage in high-level dialogue on the role of nuclear energy in the transition to clean energy sources and its contribution to sustainable development and climate change mitigation. Participants will discuss and exchange views on the key issues related to the development and deployment of nuclear energy, including the reliability and flexibility of the nuclear industry during the COVID-19 global crisis and its contribution to economic recovery efforts amid the ongoing global pandemic.
