About

I am an Environmental and Social (E&S) specialist with 22+ years’ experience in supporting Organisations and their financial backers manage Environment, Social and Governance (ESG) risks and opportunities across the world. I have worked in key sectors in particular energy (including renewables), infrastructure (pipelines, transmission lines, railways, underground, airports and roads), agribusiness, industry (aluminium), natural resources (oil & gas, mining), municipal and tourism infrastructure, and manufacturing. I have also worked for Lenders and acted as the Lenders' E&S advisor on many occasions, reviewing and monitoring project performance against the requirements of the Equator Principles, IFC Performance Standards, WBG EHS Guidelines, and EBRD Performance Requirements (amongst others).  I have worked on projects from concept to on-site implementation/construction and operation, either as (or on behalf of) project developers, Financial Institutions, and the Consent Authorities; as a Consultant; or as an Independent Lender’s E&S Advisor (I was seconded, from April 2019 till June 2020, into the FMO – Dutch Entrepreneurial Development Bank – as an Environmental and Social Officer). I have delivered numerous multi-disciplinary ESIAs to international standards, and have substantial experience in the design, implementation, certification and auditing of ESMS’s, as well as in environmental monitoring, compliance, and surveillance of construction works. In the social area, I have experience in Stakeholder Engagement, Public Participation, Grievance Mechanisms, Land Acquisition and Resettlement and Livelihood Restoration.

I have  a strong academic background (including Degree in Environmental Engineering and a Masters in Env. Systems and Management), a strong environmental and social background, vast international experience, and a deep knowledge of ESG issues and their relevance throughout a project’s life cycle. I understand the deals process, from early project appraisal and project risk categorisation, to the review of assessment documentation, due diligence and the several stages of internal approval till Financial Close, contracting, monitoring of project performance, support to project implementation on the ground. I also understand the needs of both the finance/deals teams and the internal technical teams and can easily translate lenders requirements to the internal project processes. This allows me to provide practical, realistic and pragmatic recommendations when it comes to help both project developers and IFI’s understand and address the ESG risks and opportunities associated with their investments and prevent institutional liabilities of financial and reputational nature related to its environmental and social impacts.
