The Burundi Red Cross launched, on Saturday 10 June 2017, the activities of the Support Program for Sustainable Rural Development for Nutrition (ADRN). In fact, it held a workshop that gathered the Presidents of Branch Committees and Branch Coordinators concerned by the program.
During the workshop, participants discussed the implementation of community development actions aimed at saving lives, alleviating the suffering of the vulnerable through actions to combat malnutrition and the prevention of diseases related to the lack of water, poor hygiene and sanitation.
The Secretary General of the Burundi Red Cross said the actions of the ADRN program reinforce the volunteers’ actions and fit the “Model Household” approach as a part of the 2014-2017 Strategic Plan. He further added during its implementation, this program would have to take into account the realities of each branch. “This program must question realities of each area,” said Anselme Katiyunguruza.
The National Coordinator of the program has indicated the activities will revolve around nutrition education, nutritional rehabilitation of children under five years, pregnant and lactating women, access and availability of water infrastructures, Hygiene and sanitation as well as communication for behavior change. Participants in the workshop identified the contribution of Burundi Red Cross volunteers in the implementation, monitoring and reporting of interventions. They also made a commitment to their effective involvement in the implementation of this program.
The program was jointly developed by the Burundi Red Cross and the Belgian Red Cross and reinforces the volunteer network at all levels.
