“Human trafficking is a multifaceted issue, and it’s not confined to any single region or demographic,” she explains.

Kotlyarenko emphasizes the involvement of organized crime syndicates and corrupt politicians, which complicates the fight against this heinous crime. From trafficking for sexual exploitation to forced labor and organ trafficking, the complexities of this issue necessitate a holistic solution. One of the most significant challenges in combating human trafficking is the corruption that pervades all levels of society, including law enforcement authorities.

“There’s been corruption even in police forces in terms of trafficking, victims of trafficking, or using the services of a victim of trafficking,” she states.

Transitioning to her role in evacuating at-risk individuals from Afghanistan, Kotlyarenko recounts her experience with profound passion. She, along with other human rights leaders, mobilized resources to charter planes and evacuate women judges, prosecutors, and human rights defenders from the dangerous environment in Afghanistan.

“We were able to fundraise money to charter planes and then lead women judges, women prosecutors, women human rights defenders, and others across Afghanistan to board flights to safer locations,” she shares.

This initiative, driven by a commitment to safeguard the rights of individuals in conflict zones, underscores the critical importance of international solidarity and swift action in times of crisis. When addressing misconceptions about human trafficking, Kotlyarenko emphasizes that the crime has evolved beyond traditional stereotypes.

“Many people think that human trafficking is a woman tied to a bed or radiator with metal handcuffs. It doesn’t work like this anymore,” she clarifies.

It no longer always involves physical movement across borders or overt coercion. Domestic trafficking and exploitation via online platforms have become prevalent, particularly during the COVID-19 pandemic. The exploitation of vulnerabilities, often without the use of physical force, complicates identification and intervention efforts. Technology, Kotlyarenko asserts, can be a powerful ally in the fight against human trafficking.

“There are many tools being used. The Racknet project out of Canada scours the web for pictures of child sexual abuse and removes them. Thorne, started by Ashton Kutcher and Demi Moore, also helps to protect children online and identify children in situations of trafficking,” she highlights.

These tech-based solutions exemplify how innovation can be harnessed to combat exploitation and protect vulnerable populations. Her journey from prestigious institutions to grassroots activism in Ghana underscores the need for a holistic approach that combines academic knowledge with real-world application.
