The United Nations (UN) Security Council on Wednesday renewed sanctions targeting individuals and entities fueling Haiti's deepening security crisis, as armed gangs continue to seize territory and terrorize communities across the Caribbean nation, according to a press release by UN News published on 14 October 2026. The measures aim at those considered responsible for threatening Haiti's peace, security and stability. Gangs now control large parts of the capital, Port-au-Prince, and are pushing into rural areas. About 1.5 million people, roughly 12 per cent of the population, have been forced from their homes. Haiti produces no guns or ammunition of its own, yet the gangs never seem to run out.
